SOCAN is a Canadian rights organization that tracks down and distributes royalties for Canadian artists. Membership is free and the staff have always been friendly and helpful to me. Payments are typically issued quarterly.

The only criticism I know of is from small venue owners who frequently cite high SOCAN performance fees and aggressive (borderline bullying) collection tactics. Since SOCAN's mandate is to track down money owed to Canadian artists these aggressive maneuvers could be considered good or bad, depending on your side of the issue. Some improvements might be for leniency for smaller performance venues, collecting smaller fees or waivers for certain genres of music, for example.
